The actual Cathedral was built on land belonging to Mr Jean Mathiot. Father Léon des Avanchers (1851-1855) had built a first chapel, in 1851, consecrated to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. In 1854, Father Jérémie de Paglietta bought the neighbouring site, on which he built a bigger chapel in 1856. Twenty years later – in 1876 – Father Ignace Galfione bought another plot of land to extend the church. In 1868, he had received a subsidy of 5000 rupees from the British colonial government.
Bishop Mouard bought the adjoining plot, property of Mr Victor Pourquier, former captain of the French navy. In 1892, the chapel was rebuilt using limestone and coral and became the Cathedral.
Father Amédée was the last Savoyard parish priest at the Cathedral.
On 28th October 1952, Bishop Olivier Maradan did the Dedication of the Cathedral.
Last renovation: 1995.
