Brothers of the Christian Schools

On the 5th September 1867, five brothers of the Christian Schools took charge of a school that had already been set up by Father Ignace. They chose Saint Louis de Gonzague as patron. They worked devotedly there until 1875 when they returned to Mauritius.

The Marist Brothers were in Seychelles, in charge of Saint Louis College, from 1884 to 1946. They set up the brass band of the Diocese, composed the song ‘Isola Bella’ : Je suis la plus belle des Iles.
Due to the impracticable exigencies of the Director of Education then, the Marist Brothers left the Colony inThe college closed its doors in July 1946. They have trained men from all walks of life.

At the request of Bishop Maradan, and Bishop Mathews, Apostolic Delegate for East Africa, the Congregation decides to manage Seychelles College from 1950.
1952: opening of a boarding school.
1955: inauguration of the ‘Juvénat Notre Dame des Palmes’ with 15 aspirants.
With the changes in the school system, the brothers were given the direction of primary schools, the National Youth Service and the Polytechnic.
Before their departure in 1998, due to lack of teaching personnel, they gave their home/seminary situated at Hermitage, to the ‘Filles de Marie de La Réunion’.
For almost 50 years, more than fifty Brothers from Canada, Great Britain, the United States, and Seychelles have trained/educated the Seychellois youth.
